Market Pulse — Fall Appetite Changes You Need to Know

10/3/2026

Carriers are tightening across several commercial lines as we head into fall. Property appetites are narrowing in coastal and wind‑exposed counties, and many carriers are quietly adjusting deductibles upward on renewals. Commercial auto continues to push rate, especially for fleets with mixed driver quality or incomplete telematics data.
For producers, this means two things:
  • Start renewal conversations early — carriers are taking longer to underwrite.
  • Submit cleaner applications — missing details are causing more back‑and‑forth than usual.
Fall is historically a “reset” season for underwriting, so expect appetite shifts to continue through November.

2. Coverage Gap Spotlight — Business Interruption Myths
A surprising number of insureds (and some producers) still believe BI coverage pays for “lost revenue.” It doesn’t. It pays for lost net income plus continuing expenses, and only when the loss is caused by a covered peril.
Scenario: A bakery shuts down for 10 days because a nearby water main break floods the street. The bakery wasn’t damaged — but customers couldn’t reach the store.
Common misunderstanding: “Business interruption will cover our lost sales.”
Reality: No coverage. There was no direct physical loss to the bakery, and the cause (municipal water main failure) is not a covered peril.
Producer takeaway: Use September to remind commercial clients what BI actually covers — and what it doesn’t.

3. Regulatory Quick Hit — Producer Authority Restrictions
Several states have issued reminders this quarter about producer authority limits, especially around:
  • Binding coverage without carrier approval
  • Misrepresenting coverage availability
  • Issuing certificates that imply coverage not actually provided
These violations are showing up more frequently in audits. The safest path is simple: Never bind, promise, or imply coverage until you have written carrier confirmation.

4. Seasonal Risk Reminder — Fall Storm Prep
Fall storms bring wind, hail, and early cold snaps. Clients should:
  • Trim trees and remove dead limbs
  • Clean gutters
  • Check sump pumps
  • Inspect roofs for loose shingles
  • Review flood coverage (especially AE and VE zones)
Producers who send seasonal reminders build trust and reduce claims friction later.

5. Skill Builder — How to Read a Declarations Page Like a Pro
Most producers skim the dec page. The best producers study it.
Key areas to review with clients:
  • Named insured accuracy — LLC vs. individual vs. DBA
  • Locations listed correctly — especially for multi‑site businesses
  • Coverage limits — match what was quoted
  • Endorsements — confirm required forms are present
  • Deductibles — property deductibles are creeping upward
A five‑minute dec‑page walkthrough during renewal meetings eliminates 80% of future misunderstandings.

6. Fun Segment — Insurance History Corner
In 1871, the Great Chicago Fire destroyed more than 17,000 buildings and bankrupted dozens of insurers. The disaster forced the industry to rethink underwriting, building codes, and fire protection.
It’s a reminder that the insurance industry has always evolved after major losses — and fall is a perfect time to help clients strengthen their own risk posture.

7. Client‑Facing Tool — Business Continuity Template
Producers can copy/paste this into client emails:
Business Continuity Quick Checklist
  • Identify critical operations
  • List key vendors and backup vendors
  • Create emergency communication plan
  • Store insurance documents digitally
  • Review BI coverage limits
  • Assign responsibilities for reopening after a loss
Clients love tools they can use immediately — and this one positions you as a proactive advisor.
