HOW TO INSURE FAMILIES WITH LIFE INSURANCE
National Edition
  • Learn the Coverage.
  • Find the Prospect.
  • Build the Account.
A family doesn't simply need life insurance.
A FAMILY NEEDS A PLAN FOR WHAT HAPPENS WHEN SOMEONE DOESN'T COME HOME.
  • Who replaces the income?
  • Who pays the mortgage?
  • Who pays for childcare?
  • What happens to college plans?
  • What happens to the family's standard of living?
  • What if the person who dies wasn't earning a paycheck—but was providing childcare, transportation, household management and countless other services?
Those are the conversations a professional producer should know how to have.
And just as importantly:
WHERE DO YOU FIND FAMILIES WHO NEED TO HAVE THEM?
That's what How to Insure Families with Life Insurance is designed to teach.

DON'T BEGIN WITH:“HOW MUCH LIFE INSURANCE DO YOU WANT?”
Most families don't know.
And they shouldn't be expected to.
Start with the family.
Ask:
  • “If one of you didn't come home tomorrow, what would change financially?”
Then listen.
  • Income.
  • Mortgage.
  • Childcare.
  • Education.
  • Debt.
  • Retirement savings.
  • Daily living expenses.
  • Future plans.
The purpose of the conversation isn't to manufacture fear.
IT'S TO IDENTIFY RESPONSIBILITY.

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN
This practical producer guide helps you work through family life-insurance conversations involving:
  • Family discovery
  • Income replacement
  • Household expenses
  • Mortgage obligations
  • Consumer debt
  • Childcare
  • Education goals
  • Stay-at-home parents
  • Existing life insurance
  • Employer-provided coverage
  • Term insurance concepts
  • Permanent insurance concepts
  • Ownership
  • Beneficiaries
  • Underwriting
  • Changing family needs
  • Policy reviews
  • Life-event reviews
  • Documentation
  • Cross-selling
  • Prospecting
  • Referral development
The goal isn't merely to understand life insurance.
It's to understand the family the insurance is supposed to protect.

WHO IS THIS GUIDE FOR?
Especially useful for:
  • Life & Health producers
  • P&C producers adding life insurance
  • Personal-lines agents
  • Multi-line agencies
  • New producers
  • Agency owners
  • Producers serving young families
  • Producers with large home and auto books
  • Agents looking for cross-selling opportunities
  • Producers who need a better prospecting system
If you already insure families' houses and cars, there's a good chance you already know people who need this conversation.

THE WORKING SPOUSE
Suppose one spouse earns most of the household income.
  • What happens if that income disappears?
The producer needs to understand:
  • Current income
  • Household expenses
  • Debt
  • Mortgage
  • Savings
  • Existing insurance
  • Survivor income
  • Future financial obligations
  • Length of the dependency period
The question isn't simply:
  • “How much does this person earn?”
It's:
  • “HOW MUCH OF THE FAMILY'S FUTURE DEPENDS UPON THAT INCOME?”
THE STAY-AT-HOME PARENT
This is one of the easiest family exposures to underestimate.
A parent may not receive a paycheck.
But that doesn't mean the parent has no economic value.
Consider:
  • Childcare
  • Transportation
  • Meal preparation
  • Household management
  • School responsibilities
  • Scheduling
  • Caregiving
If that parent dies, some of those responsibilities may suddenly require money.
So don't ask only:
  • “Who earns the income?”
Ask:
  • “WHAT DOES EACH PERSON CONTRIBUTE TO KEEPING THIS FAMILY RUNNING?”

CHILDREN CHANGE THE CONVERSATION
A baby creates more than another dependent.
It may create years of additional financial responsibility.
The producer should explore appropriate issues such as:
  • Income replacement
  • Childcare
  • Housing
  • Education
  • Debt
  • Future family plans
  • Existing coverage
And remember:
Coverage purchased before the first child may no longer fit after the second or third.
FAMILY PROTECTION IS NOT A ONE-TIME DECISION.

THE MORTGAGE MATTERS
Many families' largest financial obligation is their home.
Ask:
  • “If one income disappeared, would the family be able to remain here?”
That question is much more meaningful than simply asking whether someone wants “mortgage protection.”
The home is part of the family's financial plan.
So is the income paying for it.

EXISTING COVERAGE MAY NOT BE ENOUGH
A client says:
  • “I'm covered at work.”
Good.
Now ask:
  • How much coverage?
  • Is it employer-paid or employee-paid?
  • What happens if employment ends?
  • Is any portion portable or convertible?
  • What need was it intended to address?
  • Does it cover the family's actual exposure?
Never assume employer coverage is inadequate.
But never assume it's sufficient either.
VERIFY.

BENEFICIARIES DESERVE ATTENTION
Life changes.
  • Marriage.
  • Divorce.
  • Children.
  • Death.
  • Remarriage.
  • Family conflict.
A beneficiary designation made years ago may deserve review.
Producers should understand their role, document conversations carefully and recognize when legal or tax advice belongs with the appropriate professional.

FAMILY REVIEWS CREATE OPPORTUNITIES
Life insurance shouldn't disappear into a filing cabinet after the sale.
Review when appropriate.
Ask:
  • “What's changed since we last looked at your family's protection?”
Maybe:
  • A child was born.
  • Income increased.
  • A home was purchased.
  • Debt changed.
  • A spouse returned to work.
  • A spouse stopped working.
  • A child entered college.
  • The family started a business.
CHANGE CREATES THE REVIEW.

NOW LET'S FIND THE PROSPECT
This is where the How to Insure approach becomes different.
Don't begin by buying a list of strangers.
Begin with families experiencing change.

PROSPECTING TRIGGER #1
MARRIAGE
Marriage combines lives.
Often it combines financial responsibilities too.
A natural question:
  • “Now that you're building a financial life together, have you discussed what happens financially if one of you isn't here?”

PROSPECTING TRIGGER #2
PREGNANCY & NEW CHILDREN
  • A new child may be one of the strongest natural life-insurance review triggers.
  • The family is already thinking about the future.
  • Don't manufacture urgency.
The life event created it.

PROSPECTING TRIGGER #3
BUYING A HOME
If you're a P&C producer, this opportunity may be sitting directly in front of you.
  • You're writing the homeowners policy.
  • You're discussing replacement cost.
  • You're insuring the house.
Now ask:
  • “We've protected the house. Have you protected the income that pays for it?”
That's account rounding with a purpose.

PROSPECTING TRIGGER #4
A STAY-AT-HOME PARENT
  • Don't overlook families with one primary income earner.
  • Ask what it would cost to replace the services provided by the non-working spouse.
That can uncover a need the family has never considered.

PROSPECTING TRIGGER #5
INCOME CHANGES
A promotion can change:
  • Lifestyle.
  • Housing.
  • Debt.
  • Savings.
  • Future expectations.
  • Financial dependency.
When income changes substantially, protection may deserve another look.

PROSPECTING TRIGGER #6
THE TEEN DRIVER
Here's a prospecting connection a P&C agency shouldn't miss.
A teenager is added to the auto policy.
What does that tell you?
The household probably contains parents with a dependent child.
You're already talking to them.
Why not include a family protection review?
ONE SERVICE EVENT CAN OPEN ANOTHER INSURANCE CONVERSATION.

YOUR PERSONAL-LINES BOOK IS FULL OF FAMILY CLUES
Look at your agency management system.
Which clients:
  • Recently added a spouse?
  • Added a child?
  • Added a teenage driver?
  • Purchased a home?
  • Bought a larger home?
  • Added vehicles?
  • Increased liability limits?
  • Added an umbrella?
  • Changed occupations?
  • Started a business?
Those aren't merely account changes.
They can be:
LIFE-INSURANCE CONVERSATION TRIGGERS.

EDUCATIONAL PROSPECTING
Families have questions.
Answer them.
  • How much life insurance does a family need?
  • Does a stay-at-home parent need life insurance?
  • Is my employer life insurance enough?
  • Should both spouses have coverage?
  • What happens to the mortgage if I die?
  • When should we review our life insurance?
Every question can become useful content for:
  • Google Business Profile
  • Facebook
  • YouTube
  • Your website
  • Email
  • Newsletters
  • Short educational videos
  • Community presentations
Don't begin by telling people you're the greatest life-insurance agent in town.
ANSWER SOMETHING THEY WANT TO KNOW.
Then give them a reason to call.

A 30-DAY FAMILY PROTECTION PROSPECTING PLAN

WEEK 1 — FIND 25 FAMILIES
  • Look inside your existing book.
  • Identify appropriate households with recent or obvious family-protection triggers.

WEEK 2 — OFFER REVIEWS
Don't call saying:
  • “I'm selling life insurance.”
Try:
  • “We've been reviewing our clients' overall protection, and I realized we've never talked about what happens financially to the family if one of the incomes stops permanently.”
Ask whether they'd like to review it.

WEEK 3 — PUBLISH ONE FAMILY QUESTION
Create useful content around one common question.
Example:
“DOES A STAY-AT-HOME PARENT NEED LIFE INSURANCE?”
Educate first.

WEEK 4 — FOLLOW UP
Track:
  • Conversations
  • Reviews scheduled
  • Needs identified
  • Quotes requested
  • Applications
  • Referrals
  • Future follow-up dates
Then repeat.

DON'T FORGET REFERRALS
A satisfied parent probably knows other parents.
  • Neighbors.
  • Coworkers.
  • Relatives.
  • Church friends.
  • Parents from school.
  • Parents from youth sports.
You don't need an awkward sales pitch.
After helping someone:
  • “I'm glad we got this taken care of. If you know another family who's been putting off this conversation, I'm always happy to help them work through it too.”
Simple.
Professional.
No pressure.

ONE FAMILY CAN BECOME AN ENTIRE ACCOUNT
Suppose you begin with life insurance.
The family may also need:
  • Auto
  • Homeowners
  • Umbrella
  • Valuable articles
  • Disability income
  • Health insurance
  • Business insurance
  • Long-term care later in life
  • Medicare later in life
The objective isn't to sell everything today.
IT'S TO BECOME THE INSURANCE PROFESSIONAL THEY CALL WHEN LIFE CHANGES.
That's how accounts grow.

REAL-WORLD PRODUCER SCENARIOS
The guide includes practical situations involving family protection.
Instead of asking producers to memorize answers, scenarios require them to think through:
  • HEAR →
  • ASK →
  • VERIFY →
  • DOCUMENT →
  • NEXT SAFE ACTION
Because knowing the definition of life insurance isn't enough.
The producer needs judgment.

PRACTICAL PRODUCER TOOLS
Use the guide for:
  • Family discovery
  • Income-replacement discussions
  • Existing-coverage reviews
  • Stay-at-home-parent conversations
  • Mortgage protection discussions
  • Life-event reviews
  • Beneficiary discussions
  • Cross-selling
  • Prospecting
  • Educational marketing
  • Producer meetings
  • Scenario training
Keep it on your digital producer desk.
Open it before the appointment.

WHAT COULD ONE FAMILY RELATIONSHIP BE WORTH?The guide costs: $25.
  • One policy could repay it.
  • One spouse could lead to another policy.
  • One family could lead to referrals.
  • One home client could become a life client.
  • One life client could become a disability-income client.
  • One parent could become a business-owner prospect.
And you keep the guide.
